A survey conducted by QM and HMG indicates that people value the president’s approach to handling tariffs

According to the QM Public Opinion Study, in collaboration with Heraldo Media Group, most respondents believe President Claudia Sheinbaum has effectively managed the bilateral relationship with her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump.

Since his candidacy, Trump has threatened tariffs on trade partners, including Mexico. In fact, he has already imposed a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports. Sheinbaum and Trump even had a phone conversation in which they agreed to pause the tariffs for the second time until April 2.

When asked, “What do you think about the President’s performance regarding the Mexico-U.S. relationship during Trump’s administration? Would you say her performance has been...?” 74% responded “Good/Very Good,” 20% said “Fair,” 3% said “Very Bad,” 2% said “Bad,” and 1% said “Don’t know/No response.”

Another question was asked: “On March 4, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada. Were you aware of this before it was mentioned to you?” 79% responded “Yes,” 20% replied “No,” and 1% said “Don’t know/No response.”

Regarding the 25% tariff imposition, Canada immediately retaliated by imposing counter-tariffs, while Mexico chose patience. “Which of the two approaches do you think will yield better results?” 67% said “Mexico,” 20% said “Canada,” 3% said “Neither,” and 10% said, “Don’t know/No response.”

When asked about the impact of Trump’s tariff decision: “Which country do you think will be more affected, Mexico or the United States?” 38% said “The United States,” 37% said “Mexico,” 22% said “Both countries,” 1% said “No opinion”; 2% said, “Don’t know/No response.”
