After his confirmation, De la Fuente took the oath of office before the Senate and, in a subsequent press conference, stated that Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration is ready to maintain open dialogue with the United States, regardless of the outcome of the U.S. presidential election.

Tackling Narcotrafficking a Priority for the Foreign Minister

Acknowledging existing differences with the U.S., De la Fuente emphasized that dialogue will proceed with mutual respect and coordination, upholding each nation’s sovereignty.

“There is high-level political dialogue between Presidents Biden and Sheinbaum, which shapes subsequent actions and interactions,” he said.

He also announced plans to modernize and strengthen Mexico’s southern border, acknowledging that events there impact the northern border. To address migratory flows, development hubs will be established in key regions.

Regarding statements by U.S. presidential candidates on Mexico and migration issues, De la Fuente affirmed Mexico’s respect for the U.S. electoral process, adding, “We will stay attentive to the results to ensure relations continue on good terms, respecting citizens on both sides.”
