In a press conference on Tuesday, Sheinbaum also disclosed that Leonel Cota will serve as the Undersecretary of Agriculture, while Columba López will become the Coordinator of Territorial Programs.

"I wanted to share with you that this morning I had a meeting with the team, with the cabinet. Today, I met with the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. We decided to merge Segalmex with Diconsa to create a single unit… This new department will be called Alimentación para el Bienestar, and its head will be María Luisa Albores, the current Secretary of Semarnat," Sheinbaum explained.

Why is Sheinbaum merging Diconsa and Segalmex?

The president-elect stated that this decision stems from the complications caused by keeping these institutions separate. She also mentioned that Diconsa stores will be rebranded as "Tiendas de Bienestar" and will aim to ensure fair pricing.

"There are some known issues, and others arise because they are three separate units. We will consolidate them into one area, encompassing all Diconsa stores. They will no longer be called Diconsa stores but 'Tiendas del Bienestar.' This new unit, merging Diconsa and Segalmex, will oversee the guarantee prices that will now be established," she added.

Before the media, Sheinbaum highlighted her choice of the current Semarnat head to lead Alimentación para el Bienestar due to her extensive experience in the agricultural sector.

"As you know, she has vast experience in the field, particularly with small-scale production. She comes from a cooperative called Tosepan, an organization in Puebla that originated in Chiapas, where she worked for many years. She has deep knowledge of this area and is already coordinating with Julio Berdegué," she stated.

What do SEGALMEX and Diconsa do?

Seguridad Alimentaria Mexicana (SEGALMEX) is a decentralized agency under the Secretary of Agriculture responsible for setting guaranteed prices for Mexican producers. Its goal is to achieve self-sufficiency in four essential grains (corn, wheat, rice, beans) and milk while promoting economic and social development by supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

Diconsa, on the other hand, is a rural supply program that operates a vast network of fixed and mobile stores across the country. Its mission is to contribute to food security in Mexico by ensuring the social provision of goods and upholding the right to food for the nation.
