They are benefiting 107,000 of the area businesses and 700,000 workers.

The Government of Mexico City anticipates that the upcoming patriotic celebrations will generate an economic boost of 8.42 billion pesos in the downtown area. During a press conference, Mayor Martí Batres stated that this influx of revenue would benefit 100,000 businesses in the area and 700,000 workers employed in those establishments.

"This economic impact is expected to surpass last year’s by 9%, meaning an additional 600 million pesos," Batres highlighted.

Fadlala Akabani, Secretary of Economic Development, noted that hotels are expected to reach total capacity, emphasizing the significance of this year’s event, as it will mark the last “Grito de Independencia” led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

He also mentioned that the primary beneficiaries of this boost include hotels, public markets, supermarkets, department stores, costume shops, stationery stores, and general supply shops. From January to September 2024, holidays they generated 50.67 billion pesos—19.3% more than in 2023, amounting to an additional 3.4 billion pesos.

Foreign Investment

Batres further emphasized that Mexico City receives the country's largest share of Foreign Direct Investment. In the first half of 2024 alone, this totaled 26.23 billion dollars. From 2019 through mid-2024, the city attracted 69.82 billion dollars, which he described as "a record figure."

"We will continue promoting these initiatives and expect a strong economic season in September, thanks to the tourism and economic opportunities Mexico City offers," Batres concluded.

More than 9,000 Police Officers to prevent the sale and use of fireworks

As part of the *Operativo Cometa 2024* to prevent the sale and use of fireworks, 9,630 officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) will be deployed, according to Mayor Batres.

In a press conference, Batres explained that these officers would be supported by 1,188 vehicles, 10 motorcycle patrols, 5 tow trucks, 15 ambulances, 10 motorcycle ambulances from the Rescue and Medical Emergencies Squad (ERUM), and a helicopter from the General Directorate of Aerial Services, *Cóndores*.

He added that the SSC has issued safety recommendations to prevent accidents, such as avoiding the use of fireworks, especially by unsupervised children; not altering or mixing explosive devices; reporting illegal sales and storage of fireworks to 911 or through the “Mi Policía” app; and seeking medical help in case of burns.

Additionally, the Metro will activate the “Zero Fireworks” campaign to step up surveillance in key sale areas, including the Fray Servando, Merced, Candelaria, Jamaica, Indios Verdes, Cuatro Caminos, Allende, Zócalo, Pino Suárez, Bellas Artes, Balderas, and Salto del Agua stations.

“There is also a commercial entry point operation in place to prevent fireworks from entering the city, and we will continue with this operation until September 16,” Batres concluded.
