Food and Housing Record Increases in the U.S. Consumer Price Index
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that together, these two indexes contributed to more than 75 percent of the overall monthly increase across all categories.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.2 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, the same increase as in August and July, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the past 12 months, the all-items index rose 2.4 percent before seasonal adjustment.

According to the CPI Summary, the housing index increased by 0.2 percent in September, and the food index rose by 0.4 percent. Together, these two indexes contributed to more than 75 percent of the overall monthly increase across all categories.
Meanwhile, the energy index fell by 1.9 percent during the month, following a 0.8 percent decline in the previous month.
The indexes that increased in September include housing, vehicle insurance, medical care, clothing, and airline fares, while the recreation and communication indexes were among those that decreased during the month.

Food
The food index rose by 0.4 percent in September. The report highlights that five of the six major grocery store food groups increased during the month. The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs rose by 0.8 percent in September, with an 8.4 percent increase in the egg index. The fruits and vegetables index increased by 0.9 percent over the month, following a 0.2 percent decline in August.

The index for other food at home increased by 0.2 percent in September, and the index for cereals and bakery products rose by 0.3 percent. The dairy and related products index increased by 0.1 percent during the month, while the nonalcoholic beverages index remained unchanged in September.
Energy
As for energy, the Consumer Price Index fell by 1.9 percent in September, following a 0.8 percent decline in August. The gasoline index decreased by 4.1 percent during the month. (Before seasonal adjustment, gasoline prices fell by 5.1 percent in September.) The electricity index rose by 0.7 percent during the month, as did the natural gas index.

How Other Categories, Excluding Food and Energy, Performed
According to the report from the U.S. government agency that collects, processes, and analyzes statistical data on the labor market, inflation, productivity, and other key economic topics, the index for all items, excluding food and energy, rose by 0.3 percent in September, the same as in August:
- The housing index rose by 0.2 percent in September.
- The medical care index increased by 0.4 percent in the month.
- The index for physicians’ services rose by 0.9 percent in September. In contrast, the prescription drug index decreased by 0.5 percent during the month.
- The vehicle insurance index rose by 1.2 percent in September.
- The clothing index increased by 1.1 percent during the month.
- The airline fares index increased by 3.2 percent in September.
- The indexes for education, household furnishings and operations, personal care, used cars and trucks, and new vehicles also increased in September.
- The recreation index fell by 0.4 percent in September.
- The communication index decreased by 0.6 percent during the month.
